How a Senior Alert System Can Help Maintain Independence

How a Senior Alert System Can Help Maintain Independence

Posted on June 17, 2025

If you are old enough to remember the first generation of senior alert systems, you probably remember television commercials featuring an actor depicting a senior who had fallen and could not get up unassisted. Though the TV commercials have been updated, their messages are still as poignant as ever.

A senior alert system is ideal for older Americans who want to continue living independently. But they are also a great option for those living with adult children. An alert system can even be deployed in a home with a disabled resident. All the same benefits apply.

How an Alert System Works

Vivint is a nationally known provider of home security and automation systems. They offer a senior alert system that is pretty typical for the industry. It includes both a centralized hub and a wearable pendant.

The customer wears the pendant around the neck or on the wrist. Meanwhile, trained security personnel at a remote monitoring center are always ready to respond in the event of an emergency. To reach them, the customer only needs to tap a button on the pendant. The pendant connects to the hub and the hub connects to the remote monitoring center.

Thanks to onboard audio, monitoring personnel can speak with the customer in real time. If necessary, they can also contact local authorities to advise them of an emergency. If the customer needs help but is not facing an emergency situation, monitoring personnel can contact family members or a neighbor.

Staying in Their Homes Longer

The senior alert system is ideal for seniors who want to stay in their homes longer. They may not need daily outside care, but they may have some physical problems that need monitoring. A system allows them to remain independent with the help of adult children who check in with them from time to time.

In the event of an emergency, help is just a button push away. That knowledge gives both seniors and their adult children much needed peace of mind. With a senior alert system, senior homeowners are never truly alone.

Seniors Living With Adult Children

Alert systems are not just for seniors living alone. They also offer quite a bit to those living with adult children. Seniors get the same benefits throughout the day while their adult children are at work and the grandkids are in school.

One customer who left a review on the Vivint website mentioned how her elderly father likes to spend time outside in the yard. Their senior alert system gives her peace of mind in knowing that if he should fall while she is not home, he can still get the help he needs.

Another customer wrote about how she appreciates being able to signal an emergency and speak with remote monitoring personnel using the same system. She feels much safer with a system that does both.

Separately or as Part of a Package

The best thing about the modern senior alert system is that it can be installed separately or as part of a home automation package. For my money, it makes sense to include senior alerts in a package that also offers smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, smart lighting, video cameras, and smart temperature control. Nonetheless, separate systems are available.

Seniors wanting to maintain their independence for as long as possible should think about investing in a senior alert system. The systems are invaluable tools guaranteeing that help in an emergency is easily accessible. It is such a brilliant idea that I’m surprised companies like Vivint have to market their systems at all.
